Iran FM visits powerful Saudi Crown Prince amid rising tensions

Saudi state television aired images of Prince Mohammed sitting with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah.

As part of his trip to the kingdom, Iran’s foreign minister met with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Friday, showing how the two nations are attempting to defuse tensions following years of unrest.

Few specifics about their conversation were provided by the state-run Saudi Press Agency, which just stated that they discussed relations and “future opportunities for cooperation.” Although it offered no other information, Iran’s foreign ministry recognised the conversations.

Amirabdollahian arrived in the Saudi capital of Riyadh on Thursday for consultations with Prince Faisal bin Farhan, his counterpart. In March, China-mediated détente between the two nations was achieved.

However, difficulties still exist, particularly with regard to Iran’s developing nuclear programme, the Saudi-led war in Yemen, and waterway security in the area.
