As Nepal grapples with mass Gen Z protests that forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation earlier today, evacuation of VIPs and senior leaders has begun in Kathmandu. Sources confirmed that several officials are being moved to the Maharajganj Army Barracks, a heavily guarded military facility in the capital.
Helicopter evacuations underway
Around a dozen helicopters reportedly lifted off from the Bhaisepati ministerial quarters and headed toward Tribhuvan International Airport. The evacuation effort is being carried out under tight military cover as violent protests continue across Kathmandu and Lalitpur.
Protesters disrupt airport operations
Meanwhile, protesters are using social media platforms to mobilize against VIP evacuations, calling on demonstrators to gather near airports and employ fireworks, drones, and laser lights to disrupt flight operations. The campaign has already begun impacting air traffic.
Himalaya Airlines’ Airbus A319 — previously used by PM Oli for his Beijing visit — reportedly struggled to land, while Indigo and Air India flights from Delhi were seen circling, awaiting clearance. Only two departures have been recorded in recent hours, including a Thai Airways flight to Bangkok and a Chinese aircraft bound for Guangzhou.
Mounting chaos
The anti-government unrest, triggered by corruption allegations and a controversial social media ban, has escalated into full-blown political turmoil. With VIPs now being escorted under military guard, protesters are vowing to prevent leaders from leaving Nepal until accountability is fixed.
