The European Union had earlier said that if Serbia does not comply with its obligations arising from a deal to normalize ties with Kosovo, it would very negatively reflect on its membership process to the bloc.
Serbia and Kosovo had reached an agreement on 27th Feb, that Serbia and Kosovo had agreed to sign a proposal to normalize ties after a meeting in Brussels. The agreement had arised after a 12 hour talk between Albanian Prime Minister Albin Kurti, Vucic and EU officials. Now, Peter Stank, the European Union Spokesperson said that, “If the 27 member states (EU) establish that Serbia is not doing anything in the direction of de-escalation, then we will introduce the necessary measures against Serbia as well. Our approach is balanced. Of course, all measures are reversible and depend on how the partners behave in the context of de-escalation and progress towards returning to normal the dialogue process.” The 11-point agreement calls on the sides to maintain good neighborly relations and recognize each other’s documents such as passports and license plates. The EU requires Kosovo and Serbia to reach a final agreement and resolve disputes to progress in their integration into the bloc.
Most UN member states, including the US, UK, France, Germany and Türkiye, recognized Kosovo as a separate country after it declared independence from Serbia 15 years ago. Serbia, however, continues to regard it as its territory. The measures against the Government of Kosovo were introduced due to their inability to start behaving in a European manner and to de-escalate the situation.
