A strong earthquake measuring 6.6 magnitude struck near Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake was recorded 45 kilometres west-northwest of Sinabang, located on Simeulue Island off the western coast of Sumatra.

USGS data shows the earthquake occurred at a depth of 25.4 kilometres, indicating a shallow seismic event capable of producing strong local shaking.

As of now, no casualties or material damage have been reported by Indonesian authorities. There were also no immediate warnings issued regarding a potential tsunami.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most active seismic zones, making earthquakes and volcanic activity frequent across the archipelago.
