The Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China has issued a sharp response to the United States following President Donald Trump’s announcement of an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods.

In a strongly worded statement, the ministry said that while China does not seek a trade war, it is “not afraid of it,” adding that “willful threats of high tariffs are not the right way to get along with China.”

The ministry urged the U.S. to “promptly correct its wrong practices” and adhere to the “important consensuses reached during the phone calls between the two heads of state.” It emphasized that Beijing would be forced to “take resolute measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests” if Washington continues to escalate trade tensions.

China also warned that the U.S. must “protect the hard-won outcomes of consultations”, hinting that years of trade negotiations could be undone by the latest tariff move.

The fresh round of tariffs announced by President Trump marks a major escalation in the ongoing U.S.-China trade dispute, potentially impacting global supply chains and investor sentiment amid already fragile geopolitical conditions.
