Abbas Araghchi on Friday said Pakistan’s mediation efforts regarding the ongoing regional crisis involving Iran were “not a failure” but acknowledged that the diplomatic process was facing significant challenges amid continuing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The Iranian foreign minister also welcomed China’s growing diplomatic involvement and assistance aimed at improving the regional situation and reducing the risk of wider conflict escalation. His remarks come at a time of intensified diplomatic activity involving Gulf countries, Asian powers and Western nations amid fears surrounding the Strait of Hormuz crisis and instability across West Asia.
Speaking on the evolving regional situation, Araghchi indicated that mediation channels remained active despite difficulties. “Pakistan’s mediation efforts are not a failure, but they are facing challenges,” he said, signalling that diplomatic negotiations and backchannel communications were continuing.
Pakistan has emerged as one of several regional countries attempting to reduce tensions between Iran and Western-backed allies following military confrontations, sanctions pressure and disruptions affecting Gulf maritime routes. Islamabad has maintained close diplomatic ties with both Tehran and Gulf nations while repeatedly calling for dialogue and restraint.
Araghchi also praised China’s role in supporting diplomatic efforts. “We welcome China’s assistance in improving the situation in Iran,” he said, underscoring Beijing’s growing influence in regional conflict management and Gulf diplomacy.
China has increasingly positioned itself as a major diplomatic player in the Middle East over the past few years, especially after successfully brokering the restoration of diplomatic ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia in 2023. Beijing has also repeatedly called for keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and preventing escalation that could threaten global energy security and trade routes.
The latest remarks from Tehran come amid continuing uncertainty over the regional security situation, with oil markets and global powers closely monitoring developments involving Iran, the United States and Gulf countries. Diplomatic efforts involving Pakistan, China, Qatar and Oman have reportedly intensified in recent weeks to prevent a broader military confrontation.
Analysts say Iran’s public endorsement of both Pakistan’s mediation efforts and China’s diplomatic role reflects Tehran’s attempt to strengthen regional partnerships while countering international isolation pressure.
The Middle East crisis continues to remain a major global concern due to its direct impact on energy markets, maritime security and international trade flows.
