Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani appointed a council for national reconciliation, which will have the final say on whether the government will sign a peace deal with the Taliban.
Ghani issued a decree late on Saturday establishing the council, led by his former rival in last year’s presidential election, Abdullah Abdullah.
The negotiations were envisaged under a U.S.-Taliban peace deal signed earlier this year. At the time of its signing, it was touted as the war-torn country’s best chance to end decades of war.
