A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck near the eastern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake occurred at 7:10 pm local time at a depth of 24 km. Its epicenter was located about 135 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a key city in the region with a population of nearly 1.65 lakh.
A 4.8-magnitude aftershock followed shortly after. Authorities reported no immediate casualties or structural damage.
The US Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that no tsunami threat was issued in the wake of the tremor.
Kamchatka, located in the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, frequently experiences strong earthquakes due to tectonic plate movements.
