U.S. officials have explored the idea of giving lump sum payments to Greenland residents to encourage them to leave Denmark and possibly join the United States, according to Reuters. Four sources familiar with the matter confirmed the discussions.
The payments under consideration could range from $10,000 to $100,000 per person. Two of the sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing internal deliberations. White House aides have taken part in these talks.
The plan shows one way the U.S. might try to influence Greenland’s population, even though authorities in Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly said the island is not for sale.
This payment approach is part of a broader set of options the White House is reportedly considering, which could also involve the use of U.S. military resources.
