In a sharply worded statement posted on Truth Social, former U.S. President Donald Trump warned of escalated trade action against China, threatening to impose additional tariffs of 50% if Beijing does not withdraw its recently announced 34% retaliatory tariff hike by April 8, 2025.

Trump accused China of long-standing “tariff abuse” and currency manipulation, calling the latest move an aggressive escalation. He stated that any country retaliating against the U.S. with additional tariffs would be “immediately met with new and substantially higher tariffs.”

“Therefore, if China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long-term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose additional tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th,” Trump wrote.

The former President also declared that all talks with China would be terminated, and the U.S. would immediately begin negotiations with other countries that have shown interest in trade discussions.

The announcement follows days of market turmoil as global investors grapple with rising geopolitical tensions, mounting trade war fears, and heightened volatility across asset classes. The prospect of an intensified U.S.-China tariff war has rattled sentiment further, with markets already spooked by Trump’s broader tariff proposals on autos, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals.
