New Yorkers are heading to the polls today, November 4, to elect their next mayor and decide who will replace Eric Adams. In total, voters across all five boroughs are choosing between three major candidates: Representative Zohran Mamdani, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and radio host Curtis Sliwa. The polls opened early this morning and will be closing later tonight as the city waits to see who will take over the reins of America’s largest metropolis.
The race took a dramatic turn on Monday night when former President Donald Trump threw his support behind Andrew Cuomo in a surprise endorsement. Posting on Truth Social, Trump urged New Yorkers to vote for the former Democratic governor over what he called the “Communist candidate” Zohran Mamdani.
Trump’s statement immediately spurred headlines. In his post, he warned that if Mamdani won, federal funding for New York City could be at risk, claiming he would only send “the very minimum required” in support of the city. He wrote, “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds… because as a Communist, this once great City has ZERO chance of success, or even survival.”
He went on to say that a Mamdani victory would turn New York into a “complete and total economic and social disaster,” adding that the candidate’s “principles have been tested for over a thousand years, and never once have they been successful.”
In a rare show of bipartisanship, Trump described Cuomo as a Democrat with “a record of success,” arguing that he would rather see a capable Democrat win than a “Communist with no experience.” Trump wrote, “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not.”
He also briefly mentioned Curtis Sliwa, the radio host and founder of the Guardian Angels, joking that Sliwa “looks much better without the beret” but warning that a vote for him would only help Mamdani.
The endorsement immediately sent mixed responses online, as political analysts called it one of Trump’s most unexpected moves in the last several years. Cuomo, a governor from 2011 to 2021, resigned amid scandal and has since been trying a political comeback. Mamdani, a progressive Democrat and state assemblyman from Queens, has made affordable housing, public safety reform, and social equity some of the key elements of his campaign as he tries to appeal to the younger and more left-leaning electorate. With polls set to close tonight, all eyes are on how this last-minute endorsement might affect voter turnout and the final results. Follow along for live updates as the 2025 New York City mayoral election unfolds.
