Rep. Ro Khanna, a Democrat from California, has called for an urgent expansion of the protective perimeter around former President Donald Trump following a second assassination attempt. In a statement, Khanna expressed his outrage, saying, “Two assassination attempts in 60 days on a former President & the Republican nominee is unacceptable.” He urged the Secret Service to appear before Congress and outline their needs for enhanced security, advocating for a bipartisan vote to allocate the necessary resources.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer commended the Secret Service for their swift response to ensure Trump’s safety, condemning political violence and calling for the full prosecution of the perpetrator.

Similarly, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell condemned political violence more broadly, emphasizing its incompatibility with democratic values.

Florida Senator Rick Scott, a Trump supporter, expressed his concern over the “vile rhetoric” directed at Trump and highlighted the importance of halting such dangerous discourse. The FBI confirmed that Trump was targeted at his West Palm Beach golf club, with Secret Service agents intervening after spotting a rifle aimed in Trump’s direction. The suspect, who was apprehended after fleeing, left behind evidence including the weapon and a camera.

The incident has raised further questions about the Secret Service’s protective measures, particularly following previous failures to prevent a similar attempt in July. Trump reassured his supporters via email, stating he remains determined and will not surrender.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava also voiced her horror at the attack, expressing gratitude that Trump remained unharmed and reaffirming the values of safety and democracy.
