The Trump campaign has sharply criticized reports suggesting that Vice President Kamala Harris is considering Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison as a potential U.S. Attorney General in the event she wins the presidential election. The campaign describes Ellison, a well-known left-wing Democrat, as a “natural fit” with Harris, labeling both as radical liberals who support controversial criminal justice reforms.
Recent reports indicated that the Harris campaign allegedly informed Arab American leaders in Detroit of Ellison’s potential nomination as Attorney General. However, Ellison has denied these claims, calling them “lies designed to trigger the Muslim-haters.” This denial was made in response to a social media post by former acting director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell, who first highlighted the alleged report.
Ellison, who made history as the first Muslim elected to Congress, has faced criticism from conservatives for his handling of various issues, including rising crime rates in Minnesota and his remarks about Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. His tenure as Minnesota’s Attorney General has been marked by significant scrutiny, particularly in the wake of the 2020 George Floyd riots.
The speculation about Ellison’s potential nomination comes amid media reports suggesting other possible candidates for Attorney General, including current Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, former Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta, and Obama-era Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates.
Conservative commentator Julie Kelly has also mentioned U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Matthew Graves, known for his prosecution of January 6 Capitol rioters, as a potential candidate. The potential AG nomination is not the only controversy surrounding Harris. She is facing backlash from both Muslim and Jewish voters over her stance on the ongoing conflict in Israel.
The “Abandon Harris” campaign, which emerged in heavily Muslim-populated Dearborn, Michigan, criticizes Harris for her support of Israeli actions in Gaza. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump is making a push to gain support from Jewish voters, with recent polls indicating he leads Harris among this demographic in traditionally liberal areas like New York.
