Mushfiqur praises Shanto for his impressive knock as skipper against Sri Lanka

Shanto’s brilliant hundred against Sri Lanka has not only helped Bangladesh secure a  nail biting win but has also earned the batter some high praise from former captain Mushfiqur Rahim. His knock, described as a “one-man show” by Rahim, displayed Shanto’s  impeccable skill and composure under pressure.

In a high-stakes encounter, Bangladesh managed to restrict Sri Lanka to a moderate total of 255 runs in their innings. Shanto’s captaincy skills was evident on the field as his side capitalized on crucial breakthroughs against the visitors.

However, it was Shanto’s batting masterclass in the second innings that stole the spotlight. The Tigers lost their top order Litton Das (0), Soumya Sarkar (3) and Towhid Hridoy (3)  early in the game. This is where Shanto took responsibilities on his shoulder and anchored the innings brilliantly, forming crucial partnerships , first with Mahmudullah and followed by Mushfiqur.

Shanto played a remarkable innings of unbeaten 122 runs, which included 13 fours and two massive sixes. His effort were brought justice with a thrilling win for Bangladesh which undoubtedly made him Player of the Match. Post match, the 25-year-old received praising words from his senior and former skipper Mushfiqur.

“He was excellent. It was a one-man show tonight. I think leadership brings out the best in some individuals,” Mushfiqur said. “Shanto is definitely one of them. He really enjoys the captaincy. Shanto is the sort of guy who has the mentality to take responsibility as a challenge. I knew that he would score runs at the highest level,” said Mushfiqur.

Mushfiqur also mentioned on the correct atmosphere in the dressing room has a lot to do with the game.

“Atmosphere is very important. We don’t worry about the outcome. We try to keep our processes intact. We don’t expect all seven batters to get centuries every day but as long as he sticks to his strengths and practice routines, it was just a matter of time.” he added.

Shanto was appointed as a full-time skipper in February 2024 across all formats by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
