The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to María Corina Machado, the prominent Venezuelan opposition leader, for her unwavering commitment to promoting democratic rights and leading efforts toward a peaceful transition from authoritarian rule in Venezuela.

Machado’s advocacy, particularly through the organization Súmate, has been instrumental in challenging electoral fraud and defending civil liberties in Venezuela. Her leadership was pivotal in the 2024 presidential election, which marked a significant step toward restoring democratic governance in the country

Despite widespread speculation and endorsements from various international figures, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, U.S. President Donald Trump did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump had publicly claimed he “deserved” the award, citing his involvement in facilitating peace agreements in regions such as Gaza, Ukraine, and Armenia-Azerbaijan.
