A Haryana tea-seller was shocked to find that he owed Rs 50 crore to a bank even though he said he had never taken a loan in his lifetime. He wished to apply for a loan under extreme financial distress due to business failure during COVID-19 lockdown but the statement he got from the bank left him stunned.
Rajkumar earns a livelihood by selling tea near Kurukshetra in Dharmanagari, Haryana.
“I had applied for a loan as my financial situation is bad due to COVID-19. The bank rejected it saying I already have a debt of ₹50 crore. I don’t know how it is possible,” Rajkumar stated to news agency ANI.
Rajkumar claimed he had never taken out a bank loan. “I don’t know who received the loan under my name and why,” said the tea vendor adding he decided to start a new business that he was hoping to get the loan for.
He had gone to the bank with his papers, including the Aadhaar card, during which, during verifying the records, bank officials informed him that he was a defaulting party and his loan balance would not be accepted.
