The counting of votes to decide the fate of over 8,000 candidates in the fray from 542 Lok Sabha seats in 2024 is underway. As per the data from Election Commission of India (ECI), the BJP led NDA is leading on 290 seats, while Congress led INDIA is leading on 223 seats. A record breaking 64.2 crore voters including 31.2 crore women, participated in the Lok Sabha elections.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had bid for his third term, a feat that will place him on the same pedestal as former PM Jawaharlal Nehru with a record of three consecutive terms as PM. On the other hand is Congress, who is desperate to return to power after successive defeats in the past two Lok Sabha elections.
In order to form government, any party, either independent of in a coalition, should win at least 272 seats. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had won 282 seats and 303 seats in the general elections of 2014 and 2019, respectively.
The current trend shows BJP leading on 230 seats, while Congress is at 98 seats. If the current leading seats is to be followed, Congress has almost doubled its seats, while BJP is not performing up to the expectations.
