A day after the Indian government’s ‘digital backlash’ towards China, the Chinese government expresses a “strong concern” towards the situation. “China is strongly concerned. Verifying the situation” said Zhao Lijiang, spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry at a press briefing on Tuesday, as reported by ANI.

He further emphasized on India’s role in sustaining the rights of foreign investors by saying that “Indian government has a responsibility to uphold the legal rights of the foreign investors including the Chinese ones”. In the beginning of his statement, he also affirmed that “Chinese government always asks Chinese businesses to abide by international and local laws and regulations”.

This statement comes on the same day when the Head of Tik Tok India, Nikhil Gandhi, also responded with an assurance that no breach of privacy was or has ever been committed by the team. He asserted that he will adhere to the regulations of the government and would be looking forward to meeting the concerned stakeholders of the government of India for ‘clarifications’. He also emphasized on the amount of importance that is provided to the safety and security of user data.

The reactions are a result of the app ban imposed by the Indian government on 59 Chinese apps on Monday. The government of India stated that these “malicious” apps had been a source of concern and a serious action was imperative considering the data of such a huge consumer base of the country was at risk.

Amongst these apps are Alibaba’s UC Browser and the widely consumed social media app, TikTok. This ban has received a variety of reactions from across the country and has largely fueled the Anti-China sentiment proliferated post the Galwan Valley standoff.
