NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick, currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS), has been sharing some amazing photos and videos from space on X (formerly Twitter). Now, he’s gearing up for a special event with fellow NASA astronaut and renowned space photographer Don Pettit.

The two will be discussing astrophotography from space in a live chat on X at 4:05 p.m. ET on Wednesday, July 24. They’ll also be answering questions from viewers.

Don Pettit, at 69, is NASA’s oldest active astronaut and is set to embark on his fourth space mission in September. Throughout his career, Pettit has earned a reputation for capturing breathtaking space images, so his insights will be especially valuable.

Pettit was assigned as Dominick’s mentor shortly after Dominick became an astronaut, imparting his extensive photography skills to him before Dominick’s first ISS mission in March.

Pettit is known for taking extraordinary photos during his space missions. His work includes stunning shots like star trails and views of Earth from the ISS, as well as detailed scientific imagery, such as long exposures showing cosmic ray tracks.

Here are some highlights from Pettit’s previous work:

  • Star Trails and Earth: Captured the beauty of star trails and Earth, demonstrating Pettit’s skill in long-exposure photography.
  • Cupola Module View: A captivating image from the ISS’s seven-window Cupola module, showcasing a unique perspective from space.
  • Cosmic Rays: A long exposure showing cosmic rays hitting the camera sensor, revealing the dynamic nature of space.
  • Earth Reflection: A reflective shot of Earth in a Nikon D3S lens, highlighting Pettit’s use of different photographic techniques.
  • Handling Cameras: Pettit managing the various cameras available on the ISS, a testament to his role in space photography.

With such impressive work already accomplished, we’re excited to see what Pettit will capture during his upcoming mission. Don’t miss the chance to hear his and Dominick’s discussion on Wednesday.
