The world’s first 100% hydrogen train route is now open for passenger train service with the Coradia iLint. On a regional line in Germany, a total of 14 hydrogen-powered regional trains will run.

The Linde hydrogen filling station will provide daily and 24-hour fuel for the new trains. One tank of hydrogen is all it takes for the emission-free Alstom multiple units of the Coradia iLint model to operate all day on the EVB network.

These regional trains are produced by Alstom and only produce steam and condensed water while running quietly. 15 diesel-powered trains that were operating on the same route will be replaced with these latest-generation trains.

The Coradia iLint is the first passenger train in the world to run on hydrogen fuel. It produces electrical energy for propulsion in its hydrogen cell. The train’s top speed on the EVB network is 140 km/h, with speeds ranging from 80 to 120 km/h.

Four contracts for regional trains fuelled by hydrogen fuel cells are currently held by Alstom. The latter two will take place in Italy and France while the first two are in Germany.

“Emission-free mobility is one of the most important goals for ensuring a sustainable future and Alstom has a clear ambition to become the world leader in alternative propulsion systems for rail,” said Henri Poupart-Lafarge, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Alstom.

Besides this, Alstrom was awarded a contract last year in March 2021 to design, manufacture, supply, test and commission 234 metro cars, including personnel training for Line 4 and the extension corridor (Wadala-Kasarvardavali-Gaimukh).

This order is worth 220 million euros which translates to around Rs 1854 crores.
