YouTuber Gaurav Wasan booked for cheating ‘Baba Ka Dhaba’ owner

Delhi police booked YouTuber Gaurav Wasan for allegedly scamming the donation received for ‘Baba ka Dhaba‘. The police registered a case against the Youtuber after the 80-year-old owner of the shop filed an FIR in Malviya Nagar Police station. 80-year-old Kanta Prasad, the owner of the Dhaba hired a lawyer and filed a case against the Youtuber alleging that the YouTuber cheated on him by not providing all the money he received as a donation for his Dhaba.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Atul Kumar Thakur said, “After we received a complaint, a preliminary inquiry was done and an FIR was registered under section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of Indian Penal Code and an investigation has been initiated.”

The conspiracy comes a month after a video shot by Youtuber Gaurav Wasan went viral on social media. The video featured the 80-year-old with his wife tearfully recounting the desperation of the months since the lockdown. The video went viral and people offered donations for the couple. Kanta Prasad alleged that Gaurav Wasan has given his account details propagating that Kanta Prasad doesn’t have a bank account and took the whole donation while giving him only Rs 2.33 lakh.

In his complaint to police, Prasad alleged that Wasan “intentionally and deliberately shared only his and his family/friends bank details and mobile numbers with the donors and collected a huge amount of donation… without providing any information to the complainant”.

Kanta Prasad said that he was hurt that people trolled him on the complaint by calling him ‘greedy’. However, the Youtuber denies all the allegations saying “when I shot the video, I didn’t know it would become this big. I didn’t want people to harass Baba (Prasad) so I shared my bank details…” Gourav shared three receipts of the transactions, all dated October 27 — two cheques of Rs 1,00,000 and Rs 2,33,000 and one receipt of bank payment of Rs 45,000, and said the total money credited in the three days is around Rs 3.5 lakh.

However, a blogger named Tushant came in support of Prasad and alleged that Wasan has only disclosed his bank account statements from October 7 to 10 whereas he received more money after that. He demanded that Wasan must reveal his bank account statements by October 26. Tushant said that Gaurav’s claim that Prasad did not have a bank account or a mobile phone, was a “lie”.
