The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 has at last been announced, a year on from the Watch 4 – this is Samsung’s most recent premium smartwatch, which appeared at the brand’s late-2022 Galaxy Unpacked event.
Launched along with a premium Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, this wearable builds on its predecessor with improvements to health insights and a more premium design that should protect the watch better.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5: Design and display
You’re not exactly going to find the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 hugely different, design-wise, from its predecessor.
So it’s a similar appearance with the body and the band, yet looks aren’t all that matters. This watch uses a more hardy material, including a sapphire crystal in the screen, and Samsung says it’s 60% more scratch resistant than its predecessor, which used a Gorilla Glass 3 crystal from Corning.
| Screen Size | Screen Resolution | Battery Size | Weight | |
| 40mm | 1.19″ | 396 x 396 pixels | 284mAh | 29g |
| 44mm | 1.36″ | 450 x 450 pixels | 410mAh | 32.8g |
| Pro | 1.36″ | 450 x 450 pixels | 590mAh | 46g |
Samsung Galaxy Watch 5: Battery life
The Galaxy Watch 5 has a bigger battery than its predecessor, around 15% bigger than the Galaxy Watch 4. The two watches have the exact same internal specs, including similar Samsung Exynos W920 chips, so every other thing being equal, battery life should be just a bit better on the newer Galaxy Watch 5.
The device will charge with a proprietary magnetic pin charger that you’ll have the option to connect with a USB cable. Samsung says the watch will charge up to 45% in 30 minutes with a 25W charger, not included.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 5: Health features
Here is a list of everything Samsung claims the sensors on the Galaxy Watch 5 will (eventually) be able to track:
- Body fat
- Skeletal muscle
- Body water
- Basal metabolic rate
- Blood oxygen
- Skin Temperature
- Heart rate
- Stress Level
- Sleep time
- Step count
- Snoring
Samsung Galaxy Watch 5: Sleep tracking
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 could track your temperature to decide whether environmental changes would assist you with sleep. Finding spikes in your body temperature during the night could imply that a more comfortable environment would improve your sleep, and a skin temperature sensor can find that pattern.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 5: Performance
The Samsung Galaxy Wear 5 will run Wear OS 3.5, a wearable system co-designed by Google and Samsung. Samsung will contribute its One UI Watch 4.5 system also. This implies the watch will for sure be able to respond using both Google Assistant and Samsung’s Bixby, for good and in negative ways. Also the new health and sleep tracking features, Samsung says it has added 8 new watch designs, as well as 10 new improved watch faces.
Inside, the Galaxy Watch 5 uses the same 1.5GB of RAM with 16GB of storage as the older Galaxy Watch 4.
The watch will be very tough. The Galaxy Watch 5 is certified well beyond its IP68 rating. The watch can survive a dive to five atmospheres of depth, over 100 feet. It meets military specifications for durability to MIL-STD-810H.
