Bluepoint Games, a Texas-based video game developer studio renowned for its remakes of classic PlayStation titles such as ‘shadow of the Colossus’ and ‘Demon’s Souls,’ has been acquired by Sony, making it the first-party studio for Sony Interactive Entertainment.
While the relationship between Bluepoint Games and Sony Entertainment has been long-standing, the studio has been roped in by Sony to develop original content for PlayStation for the very first time. Prior to this, Bluepoint Games had remastered games such as the three editions of ‘Uncharted’ and ‘Gravity Rush’ for Sony.
In an interview with IGN, Herman Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios said, “Bluepoint is now in a place where there’s hardly an entity imaginable that knows PlayStation better than they do because they’ve worked with so many different teams on their respective, iconic franchises that they’ve had a developer insight in a wonderful way,” commenting on Bluepoint Games’ and Sony’s long term association.
Speaking on the plans for the acquisition going forward, Marco Thrush, the Studio’s President stated that “Our next project, we’re working on original content right now. We can’t talk about what that is, but that’s the next step in the evolution for us,” further explaining that the growth of the studio while developing remakes for PlayStation was a natural stepping stone for this acquisition and to cement the relationship between the two entities.
“The transition from remasters to remakes was to test ourselves and push ourselves harder for the next step,” Thrush said, stating that the team strength grew from 15 during the production of the original God of War collection to about 70 employees today, and grew to 95 people at its peak during Demon’s Souls remake.
Expressing his excitement to work on original games for PlayStation for the first time, Thrush explained that “We have that original game development mindset in our hearts, and that’s what we’re now ready, finally ready with the support of Sony to push forward and show what we can do, and show what PlayStation can do.”
Meanwhile, Bluepoint Games has become Sony’s fifth high-profile acquisition for Sony Interactive Entertainment since March 2021. Within the last six months, SIE has acquired developers such as Housemarque, Nixxes Software and Firesprite.
