Strands is a brand new daily puzzle from the New York Times. A trickier take on the classic word search, Strands requires a keen eye and a strategic mind to solve.
How to Play Strands
In Strands, your goal is to find the “theme words” hidden in a grid of letters. You can manipulate letters by dragging or tapping to form words; double-tap the final letter to confirm the word. If you find a correct theme word, the letters will be highlighted in blue and will no longer be selectable.
Even finding non-theme words is helpful! For every three non-theme words you discover that are at least four letters long, you receive a hint—letters of one of the theme words will be revealed, and you just need to unscramble them.
Every letter on the grid is used to spell out the theme words, and there is no overlap—each letter is used exactly once.
Each puzzle also contains one “spangram,” a special theme word (or words) that describes the puzzle’s theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. Finding the spangram will highlight it in yellow.
The goal is to complete the puzzle quickly and efficiently, using as few hints as possible.
