Strands is the latest puzzle game from the New York Times, offering a trickier twist on the classic word search. If you enjoy Wordle, Connections, and the Mini Crossword, you’ll find Strands equally engaging, though it can be challenging at times.

How to Play Strands

The goal in Strands is to find the “theme words” hidden within a grid of letters. You can drag or tap letters to form words, and double-tap the final letter to confirm your selection. Correct theme words will be highlighted in blue and will become unselectable.

Finding non-theme words is still beneficial. For every three non-theme words (at least four letters long), you earn a hint revealing letters of a theme word that you’ll need to unscramble.

Each letter in the grid is part of a theme word and will be used only once. The puzzle also includes a “spangram,” a special word that touches two opposite sides of the board and reveals the puzzle’s theme when found.

The goal is to solve the puzzle quickly and with minimal hints.
