God of War 6 has a sad update guys!

If the latest update is accurate, fans might be in for a lengthy wait before God of War 6 sees the light of day.

Developed by Sony’s Santa Monica Studio, the God of War series has become a major player in the mythology-based action genre. It includes five mainline games, a prequel for the PS3, two handheld spin-offs, and an upcoming streaming adaptation.

To put it in perspective, the core development team at Sony Santa Monica has been deeply immersed in the God of War universe for nearly two decades. Since the release of the first game in 2005, they’ve focused almost exclusively on this series, making it a central part of their creative output.

God of War 6 Release Prospects In Doubt

According to the latest update, it looks like Sony Santa Monica might not be diving straight into God of War 6 next.

The buzz comes from a LinkedIn profile of a developer who previously worked on God of War: Ragnarok. The profile mentioned that they were hired to oversee the Character Development pipeline for a new IP, suggesting the studio might be focusing on something different right now.

This hint is the first sign that the studio is branching out from the God of War series since the release of Ragnarok in 2022. If this is accurate, it could mean that fans will have to wait longer for the next God of War game, as it might not be the studio’s immediate project.

However, Sony Santa Monica has grown significantly and likely has multiple teams. This could mean that while one team works on the new IP, another might still be developing the next God of War game. This would shorten the wait for the new installment, even if it’s not the studio’s sole focus right now.

Cory Barlog, who directed God of War (2018) and shifted to a lead producer role for Ragnarok, has hinted that he’s working on something exciting at the studio. In a March 2024 post on X (formerly Twitter), he praised the early work on his new project, suggesting it could be the new IP.

While the mention of a new IP might surprise fans eager for God of War 6, it’s not unexpected given the studio’s long focus on the series. However, it doesn’t mean that another entry in the God of War saga isn’t coming. The Norse saga was initially intended to be a trilogy, but it was condensed into two games. Despite Ragnarok wrapping up this particular storyline, it also set up potential new directions for Kratos and Atreus.

Whether the next game will continue the Norse saga or explore new mythologies, such as ancient Egypt or Rome, remains unclear. What’s certain is that the God of War series, with its critical acclaim and strong sales—over 66 million copies sold worldwide—will likely continue to be a major part of PlayStation’s lineup.

For now, fans might need to be patient as Sony Santa Monica balances its new projects with potential future entries in the God of War franchise.
