Social distancing is the new normal and seems like it is here to stay. All those group selfies that people used to take with their friends don’t seem like will be a common sight on social media platforms. However, it appears that Apple may come up with a method to take socially distant group selfies.

According to Apple, the Cupertino-based tech giant has been granted a patent that “covers a computing device that can generate a synthetic group selfie.”

“A synthetic group selfie can be an arrangement or composition of individual selfies obtained from a plurality of computing devices into a single group image. The individual selfie images can be still images, stored video images or live streaming images,” describes the patent.

It could work like Group FaceTime, where a user can invite others to take selfies, suggests a report by The Protocol. This could be a valuable addition in these times where social distancing has to be maintained but people may still want to replicate the ideas of pre-coronavirus days.

The patent was filed by Apple in 2018, and the current circumstances haven’t made the company come up with this solution. Since this is still a patent, it’s not certain if the idea would be converted into reality. But socially distant selfies may just be an idea that sooner or later becomes reality.
