China is already experiencing the global buzz surrounding Microsoft’s chatbot ChatGPT, which has boosted shares of companies involved in artificial intelligence (AI) and prompted a flurry of local businesses to unveil competing projects.

Comparable to Google and Microsoft? Over the past few years, smaller start-ups and Chinese IT heavyweights like Baidu and Alibaba have both worked on AI projects.

ChatGPT performs better at more professional tasks, like programming and essay writing, than chatbots in China, which mostly focus on social interactions. ChatGPT learns from a massive quantity of data how to respond to user queries in a human-like manner.

On February 7, Baidu Inc. stated that internal testing of the “Ernie Bot” project, which is modelled by ChatGPT, will be finished in March.
