AirDrop like file-sharing feature was much appreciated all over the world, the feature gained world-wide publicity because of its easy use. Now the tech giant Google has also worked upon the almost same concept and launched out a beta version of the feature which is named as Nearby Sharing.
Currently, it’s available only for selected users who are registered with the Google Play Services Beta testing program.
In an interaction with AndroidPolice, Google spokesman said that, “We’re currently conducting a beta test of a new Nearby Share feature that we plan to share more information on in the future. Our goal is to launch the feature with support for Android 6+ devices as well as other platforms.
When enabled, the users can find a Nearby Sharing app icon in the sharing sheet, which will allow users to share images, links, videos, documents, and other content.
There is one thing, which lacks in AirDrop and Google provided it, the consent. In Nearby Sharing, the recipient will have to consent before someone can wirelessly transfer content to their phone via the app.
First-time users will have to configure the settings like device name, visibility status, and the connectivity medium from which they want to do the file transfer. There will be visibility options namely, All Contacts, Some Contacts, and Hidden.
It is speculated that the feature will be released with the stable build of Android 11 later this year
