The road accident involving Anthony Joshua on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway has drawn widespread attention, especially after images from the crash scene and photos of the boxer taken shortly after the incident began circulating online. Nigerian authorities, including the police and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), have since released key details explaining what led to the crash.

Exact Location of the Accident

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that the crash occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, just before a Danco petrol station near the Sagamu Interchange, north-east of Lagos. This section of the highway is a major transport corridor with frequent heavy-vehicle movement and is often flagged for speeding-related incidents.

Anthony Joshua was travelling in a Lexus SUV at the time of the accident.

Police Version: How the Crash Happened

According to the police, the Lexus SUV lost control and collided with a stationary truck parked by the side of the road. The impact caused severe damage to the SUV and left debris scattered across the expressway, as seen in images released after the incident.

Officers at the scene indicated that visibility and traffic flow were not the primary issues, pointing instead toward the manner in which the vehicle was being driven immediately before the collision.

FRSC Findings: Overspeeding and Overtaking

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) provided a more detailed technical explanation. Based on preliminary investigations, the agency stated that the Lexus Jeep was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit.

FRSC officials further explained that the vehicle lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre. While attempting to overtake, the driver reportedly failed to regain control of the SUV, which then crashed into the stationary truck along the roadside.

Authorities stressed that overspeeding significantly reduces reaction time and vehicle stability, particularly on highways with mixed traffic conditions.

Casualties and Injury Status

Road safety officials confirmed that five adult males were involved in the accident. Tragically, two people died as a result of the crash. Two others escaped without injuries.

Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and sustained minor injuries, according to officials. He was taken for medical attention as a precautionary measure, and authorities confirmed that his injuries were not life-threatening.
