Justin Jefferson will remain in Minnesota for the foreseeable future.

The Vikings ensured the star wide receiver would stay with the team by signing him to a historic contract extension, securing him as a integral part of the franchise.

Jefferson announced in a video uploaded to his Instagram on Monday that the moment has arrived. “The agreement that I have eagerly anticipated since I was a young child.  Jefferson has been a member of the Vikings ever since he was selected by them as the 22nd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. After the extension, he has a contract with Minnesota until 2028.

Jefferson has just increased his wealth even further. The star receiver for the Vikings is being offered a contract that breaks records for wide receivers. For four years, he is expected to make $140 million, resulting in an average annual value (AAV) of $35 million.

Prior to Jefferson’s extension, only three NFL receivers had been making $30 million or higher each year. His annual average value of $35 million will surpass the previous record of $32 million set by A.J. Brown.

Even with only 10 games under his belt, Jefferson managed to surpass the 1,000-yard milestone in 2023. He has also scored a total of 30 receiving touchdowns, with his highest in a single season being 10 in ’21.

The star receiver has played alongside Kirk Cousins for nearly every game in his career, except for six. During those six games without Cousins, Jefferson accumulated 38 catches for 561 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 6.33 receptions and 93.5 yards per game.

In comparison, Jefferson has achieved an average of 6.55 catches and 98.9 yards per game when playing with Cousins, along with scoring 28 receiving touchdowns.

Cousins’ departure from the Vikings means Jefferson must now aim to develop a strong connection with Minnesota’s first-round selection, J.J. McCarthy. The Vikings will surely be happy to have their primary receiver secured to provide their rookie quarterback with a top-level target for the entirety of his contract (four years with a fifth-year possibility).
