The technology behind virtual reality (VR) has been around for decades, but it is only in the last few years that it has become a decent and accessible option for many people to use. For example, the PlayStation VR is listed as being the best-selling headset, with five million units sold at the start of 2020. In addition, 20% of Facebook’s staff are said to be working exclusively on VR and augmented reality gaming.
If this sector is to continue to grow at this impressive rate, new developments will likely be needed to encourage more new users to give it a try. So, what other areas might we see introducing this type of technology?
A New Type of Travel Experience
One of the most interesting potential uses for VR is to let us travel the Earth and beyond without leaving home. This would allow us to experience distant locations or places that are difficult to get to without financial or physical restraints. However, while using a headset could make a type of complete travel experience on its own, it is more likely to be used mainly for marketing purposes.
By giving viewers a genuine glimpse of what it is like to be in a certain place, travel agents should be able to increase tourists’ interest in visiting it. Imagine a themed evening where a travel agent invites you to wander around a new city while listening to music from there and then sampling the cuisine for real. It is something that should ensure a treat for all of our senses and pique interest in visiting in person.
The Continued Rise of Casino Gaming
Online casinos have been big news in the last decade or so, as many players have decided to play online. This has led to developments such as live dealer games at platforms including the Genesis online casino in India, where such an established casino adopting this technology speaks volumes about its success. Games such as roulette, blackjack, and poker can be played in this way, with a human dealer streamed on the screen to add a genuine casino atmosphere.
VR technology could move these games onto the next level, as the player would feel as though they are really there, soaking up the sights and sounds of a busy casino floor. This would allow you to walk from the roulette table over the blackjack table and watch others play before deciding where to place your chips and start wagering, leading to yet further immersion into the virtual casino space.
Immersive News Reports
We tend to think of VR as being most useful for losing ourselves in a virtual world where we control the action by adopting VR in journalism. Yet, this technology could also be used to let us see and understand the latest news stories far better. When a breaking news story appears from anywhere on the planet, we could decide to head there instantly and see the news as it breaks and as though we were really there.
This could give us a better idea of how people live in different parts of the world and help aid education and understanding of different cultures, events, and ways of life. Although, one issue with any VR experience is the positioning of ads. For example, Resolution Games stated that Blaston won’t be used in Facebook’s testing due to feedback on ads, which could be a problem in news content too.
All of these ideas look like great ways to make the most of VR’s potential and offer us new opportunities to enjoy something different. It is also possible that this technology is used in other new and interesting ways that take us by surprise.
