The match started six hours earlier at the Louis Armstrong Stadium but due to extreme weather conditions, finished at the Arthur Ashe stadium. There was a long delay but it didn’t deter the 29-year-old Argentine who defeated Anderson in straight sets to place himself in the third round of the Grand Slam.
Former Hurricane Ida caused absolute havoc at the Flushing Meadows today by flooding the courts, toppling the furniture and it forced the suspension of the Schwartzman vs Anderson match two times during the first set when it was being played under a closed roof at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.
The second-round match between them was suspended first when the set was at 5-5 for half an hour. The second suspension came during the tiebreak at 4-4 when the players complained about the surface becoming slippery to play. Outside the Meadows, there was utter chaos due to the hurricane as the subway closed down and fans were wading through knee-deep water to get to their transportation. The trees outside of the USTA Billie Jean King Center were also uprooted.
Both of them came back as the first set took over an hour and 48 minutes to complete. The match was suspended again after the first game of the second set. Anderson was serving 30/15 during that game. The match started again in the Arthur Ashe Stadium after the ending of the Tsitsipas-Mannarino match where the third seed Tsitsipas won. In front of adoring fans in the main court, Schwartzman won three straight games after the set was at 3-3.
In the third set too, he raised the level of his game with several powerful winners in a row to come back in the third set to break and keep the score at 3-3. The Argentine pushed Anderson outside of the lines and defeated him within three hours and 13 minutes and ended a remarkable match. This was Schwartzman’s 25th victory this year.
