The Russians and Belarusians get banned from this year’s Wimbledon championships to support the victims who got affected in Ukraine following the conflict.
“On behalf of the All England Club and the Committee of Management of The Championships, we wish to express our ongoing support for all those impacted by the conflict in Ukraine during these shocking and distressing times,” read a statement released by the champions on-site Wimbledon.com.
The tournament further stated that following such “unjustified and unprecedented military aggression” they don’t want the Russian regime to have any benefits from the championships. The declaration also stated that in case of changes from today to June, the championships will be responding back about it by the situation.
The 134th edition of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships is scheduled to commence on June 27 and will run until July 10. The tournament was started 145 years ago in 1877 and is played on grass. Swiss legend Roger Federer has the record of eight titles in men’s singles while Novak Djokovic is the defending champion. In women’s, Ashleigh Barty is the current champion while Martina Navratilova has the most titles counting nine.
