At the start of the season, many predicted it would be Manchester City leading the charge for the Premier League title, especially as they are the defending champions. And, if it wasn’t City, it would surely be Liverpool. However, Mikel Arteta and Arsenal had other ideas and have led the way from the beginning, and look on course to lift the Premier League trophy in May.
At the time of writing, Arsenal are top of the table. They have a three-point lead over City and a game in hand on the defending champions, and while they may still not be favourites to be champions where betting on the English Premier League is concerned, there are many reasons why this could be the year that the Gunners return to the top of English football after so many years away. And, if they convert these reasons into realities, you just never know.
As harsh as it may sound, one of the primary reasons why Arsenal will win the Premier League this season is because those around them have faltered on many occasions already. Both Manchester City and Liverpool, the teams who finished first and second last term, have been nowhere near their usual levels, and this has opened the door for Arsenal, who have been able to build a much better degree of consistency. Consistency in the English top flight will always be the key to success, and everyone knows it, especially City.
Things haven’t always been great since Arteta took over at the Emirates, and there were calls for the Spaniard to be axed previously. However, the Arsenal hierarchy, including the likes of Josh Kroenke and Edu, have always stuck with the plan they had in place, which included Arteta, remaining steadfast in their approach and believing in the process. And the belief they have shown has then been repeated by Arteta with his players. Resilience has been a crucial element on and off the pitch.
If you want to succeed in the Premier League, you must win as often as possible and lose as few games as possible. Under Arteta this season, Arsenal haven’t only found a way to win, but they’ve found a way not to lose, too, with only two reverses to their name all campaign, which is quite remarkable. Of the twenty-one games played so far, Arsenal have won sixteen, drawn three and lost two, with a stunning points per game average of 2.43.
And the final piece of the jigsaw, and why Arsenal will be declared Premier League champions in May, is that they not only have high-quality players and plenty of youthful energy, but their squad is balanced too. For example, you look at the midfield trio of Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka and Martin Odegaard, and it has everything you need. And there’s also Jorginho, a recent arrival from Chelsea, waiting in the wings and ready to play his part. You can look through the various units and positions and say the same, and it all comes back to trusting the process and having that belief from the top of the club down.
