The iconic duo of Wayne Rooney and Patrick Vieira, both of Manchester United and Arsenal join Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Steven Gerrard, and David Beckham as the ninth and tenth former players to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, following in the footsteps of Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Steven Gerrard, and David Beckham, who have all been voted in during the Hall of Fame’s debut year in 2021.
They are the ninth and tenth players to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Frank Lampard, Dennis Bergkamp, Steven Gerrard, and David Beckham are the previous 8 players inducted into the Premier League’s Hall of Fame.
Rooney, who made his name at Everton before joining United and won five Premier League titles, called the induction a “great honour.” While Vieira thinks this makes him realise that he had a pretty terrific career.
Rooney netted 183 Premier League goals in 13 seasons at Old Trafford, becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer in the competition. Between 2006-07 and 2008-09, he lifted the League five times, notably three in a row.
Vieira played for Arsenal and Manchester City. During his 11 seasons with Arsenal, Vieira won three Premier League titles and was voted Premier League Player of the Season in 2000-01. Vieira’s Premier League career, though, was defined by his memorable bouts with another hall of Famer and midfield tough man Roy Keane. The France World Cup winner is pleased with his contributions in helping to reinvent the holding midfield role.
