Manchester United were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League Round of 16 clash last night. Joshua Zirkzee put the Red Devils ahead in the second half, but Sociedad responded through a controversial penalty converted by Mikel Oyarzabal.
United struggled to break down the Spanish side in the first half, but Zirkzee’s composed finish after the break gave them the advantage. However, their lead was short-lived, as the referee awarded Sociedad a penalty following a debatable handball decision. Oyarzabal made no mistake from the spot, ensuring the tie remains finely balanced heading into the second leg at Old Trafford.
With everything to play for, Amorim’s side will need to capitalize on home advantage to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
