Tottenham Hotspur have defeated Villarreal in the last night’s Champions League 2025/26 opening night. Thomas Frank’s side have managed to get the first win in first fixture and will try to continue this run throughout the season. However, there wasn’t any Spurs’ player who scored as it was an own goal that came in the 4th minute of the game. After the first goal, the game went pretty boring as the chances was not so clinical. Villarreal had chances to equalise but thanks to Spurs who managed to keep them restricted.
Thomas Frank’s side secured the three points in their home ground, though the victory came in unusual fashion, with no Spurs player finding the net.
The decisive moment arrived as early as the 4th minute when a Villarreal defender mistakenly turned the ball into his own net, gifting Spurs the lead. From there, the game struggled to gather much rhythm. Tottenham held their advantage but rarely looked threatening in attack, while Villarreal pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
Despite creating a few opportunities, the Spanish side lacked a clinical edge in the final third. Spurs’ defence, however, remained firm and ensured the narrow lead stayed intact until the final whistle.
Frank will be pleased with the winning start, even if the performance left room for improvement.
