Arsenal are looking to outbid Barcelona for Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino. The Spanish international, whose contract is nearing its end, has caught the attention of several top clubs following his standout performances in Euro 2024.

Merino, formerly with Newcastle, could be set for a return to England’s Premier League. While Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have shown interest, Arsenal are reportedly in a strong position financially. Real Sociedad is keen to secure the best possible deal for Merino, who has a €60 million release clause.

Barcelona, despite having the financial means, are focusing on other priorities this summer, including potential moves for Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao and Dami Olmo from RB Leipzig. Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, are negotiating for defender Robin Le Normand.

Merino impressed during Euro 2024, notably scoring the decisive goal in the quarterfinals against Germany and featuring throughout Spain’s successful campaign. The midfielder has indicated he will evaluate his options and discuss his future with Sociedad before making a decision.
