Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has called on La Liga officials to focus on improving the league domestically rather than pursuing plans to host games abroad. The Belgian shot-stopper made the comments following Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League victory over Juventus, voicing his frustration at the current state of Spanish football.
“In my view, before going to the USA to play a football game, La Liga should now focus on improving itself,” Courtois said. “It’s not normal at all to see teams here on September 1st trying to make miracles happen in order to register players, selling their stars and everything we’ve seen.”
Courtois’ remarks come amid renewed discussions about La Liga’s ambition to stage official matches in the United States, an idea that has been met with mixed reactions from players, fans, and clubs alike. While the league aims to expand its global reach, Courtois believes the focus should remain on strengthening Spanish football from within.
