The Football Union of Russia is set to appear in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to appeal against the ban imposed on both men’s and women’s national teams by FIFA and UEFA after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
Both clubs and national teams were banned until ‘further notice’ from all competitions including the World Cup qualifiers and Paralympics happening this year. The union also stated that they would file one lawsuit against European governing bodies, with demands for Russian men’s and women’s teams to be removed from the ban, reported BBC Sports.
Russia’s national team captain had also spoken up regarding the issue. “I don’t understand why athletes have to suffer now. I am against war but I am also against double standards”, said Artem Dzyuba via Instagram.
