Roma are claiming millions from FC Basel in connection with Riccardo Calafiori’s transfer from Bologna to Arsenal. This has further complicated the deal.
The Gunners have agreed to sign the 22-year-old Italian centre-back from Bologna for €45m plus €5m in add-ons, seemingly putting an end to the transfer saga. The complications arose due to FC Basel’s 50% sell-on clause.
Calafiori impressed under Thiago Motta at Bologna last season, playing a key role in their historic Champions League qualification. His performance also drew attention during the recent European Championship, catching the eye of Arsenal.
However, Roma now believe they are owed around €8m from FC Basel. The reason is a 40% sell-on clause included in the deal when Calafiori moved from Italy to Switzerland in August 2022. Roma argues that their 40% sell-on clause includes both the €1.6m they earned from his sale to Bologna last year and the 50% sell-on clause attached to that deal.
