It has now emerged that Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner played a decisive role in blocking Marc Guehi’s move to Liverpool this summer.

Guehi had already completed his medical on Merseyside and was on the verge of signing a long-term contract with the Reds before the deal dramatically collapsed. According to reports, Glasner made it clear to the Palace hierarchy that he would resign if the England defender was sold without a quality replacement in place.

Palace had identified Brazilian centre-back Igor, then at Fiorentina, as Guehi’s successor. The 26-year-old even underwent a medical with the Eagles, but a late hijack from West Ham United saw him head to the London Stadium instead. Left without a replacement, Palace pulled the plug on Guehi’s switch to Anfield, backing Glasner’s demand.

The revelation has left Guehi bitterly disappointed. The 24-year-old had set his sights on joining Liverpool and, as things stand, has no intention of signing a new contract at Selhurst Park. With his current deal expiring in 2026, Palace now risk losing a prized asset for nothing if they cannot resolve the situation in the coming windows.
