In their fast match as Champions of England, Jurgen Klopp’s men were given a run for their money by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. The match began with the blues lining up for a guard of honour for their rival champions. However, things took a quick turn from thereon.
Manchester City took a lead in the 25th minute from a Kevin De Bruyne penalty after Joe Gomez brought down Raheem Sterling in the box.
Sterling and Phil Foden, then scored one goal each to completely put the tie in their favour, rounding off a 3-0 lead.
In the 66th minute, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain inadvertently touched a goal-bound Raheem Sterling’s shot into his own net in an attempt to clear which brought the scoreline to 4-0. Deep into extra time, Riyad Mahrez netted the fifth goal for City, by squeezing it into the left bottom corner away from Alison, however this was later adjudged as ‘no-goal’ after using VAR. The match ended with a scoreline of 4-0 against the newly crowned champions.
