Manchester United’s defender Lisandro Martinez has been dealt a serious blow after being ruled out of the rest of the 2022/23 season. The Argentine sustained a metatarsal fracture during United’s UEFA Europa League quarter-final clash against Sevilla on Thursday.
Martinez was a key member of United’s backline this season, having played in several important matches. The 24-year-old defender joined United last summer from Dutch side Ajax, and quickly established himself as a reliable option for Erik ten Hag’s side.
The injury comes at a critical stage of the season for United, who are still in the race for both the Premier League and Europa League titles. The loss of Martinez will be a significant blow to the team, as he has been a vital part of the defense this season.
The club’s medical team is expected to work closely with Martinez to ensure that he makes a full recovery from the injury. However, with the severity of the injury, it’s unlikely that he will be able to play again this season.
Manchester United will now have to rely on their remaining defenders to step up and fill the void left by Martinez’s injury. The likes of Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindelof will need to be at their best if the team is to continue their pursuit of silverware.
