Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho showered a great deal of praise on midfielder Pierre Emile Hojbjerg after Spurs’ 2-0 win over North London rivals Arsenal. A wonderful long ranger from Heung Min Son put Spurs ahead in the 13th minute before Harry Kane extended their lead just before half time.

A win on Sunday pushed Tottenham backed to 1st in the Premier League table. A major talking point since the game has been he signing of Pierre Emile Hojbjerg. Signed for just 17 million pounds from Southampton, Hojbjerg’s arrival has improved Tottenham defensively, allowing the likes of Tanguy Ndombele to push forward and create chances.

Hojbjerg has been a solid midfielder in the Premier League for years and has really gone under the radar. Considering the impact the Danish defensive midfielder has had on Mourinho’s Spurs, this signing is one of the bargains of the transfer window.

The Portuguese manager had nothing but good things to say about the 25 year old.

“Pierre is, first of all, very intelligent. He reads the game very well. He’s going to be a coach one day, for sure. He’s a pain, asking questions about why we do this and why we do that. On the pitch, he reads the situation very, very well and the people that surround him are really compact, they read the game.”

“Physically he’s very, very strong and technically he’s much better than people think. Because sometimes people think the guy that is good technically is the guy that does the backheel. The guy that is good technically is the guy that does something wonderful. But these are not my words. These are words from coaches of 30, 40 years ago. Simplicity is genius.

Mourinho also praised Tottenham’s chairman Daniel Levy for recruiting Hojbjerg.

“And the guy is so simple in everything he does with the ball. And I think he’s a phenomenal player. Congratulations, Mr. Levy.”
