Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana is set to join Turkish side Trabzonspor, with reports confirming that the Cameroonian international will earn a higher salary as part of the deal.
According to renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Trabzonspor will not only cover Onana’s current wages at Manchester United but will also add a signing fee and performance-related bonuses to ensure the 28-year-old shot-stopper enjoys an improved financial package in Turkey.
The deal has moved swiftly, with contracts already signed and only the medical tests remaining before an official announcement is made later this week. This development marks a rapid turn of events for Onana, who joined United from Inter Milan just last to last summer in a £47 million deal.
Onana’s debut season at Old Trafford has been turbulent, with moments of brilliance overshadowed by high-profile errors in both domestic and European competitions. Despite finding his rhythm midway through the campaign, United’s struggles as a whole, combined with the club’s summer rebuild plans, have paved the way for his departure.
Trabzonspor, meanwhile, have made a strong statement by securing a player of Onana’s caliber. The Turkish giants are determined to challenge for the Süper Lig title and make their presence felt in Europe, and the arrival of a high-profile goalkeeper underlines their ambition.
