The European Super League is back in the picture with nine of the teams that were initially part of the breakaway Super League are now welcomed back into the decision-making organization overseeing the European club level game. The league was officially announced back in April 2021. The revealed teams that were part of the project in the early days were heavily criticised by football fans around the world along with threats from UEFA stating that all teams that would participate in the Super League shall not be allowed to compete in the UEFA held tournaments such as the Champions League, Europa League and UEFA Euro.

The Premier League’s big six consisting of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal will be a part of the European Club Association along with the Serie A sides of AC Milan, Inter Milan and the La Liga champions Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus have not intention of giving up on the largely closed breakaway tournament to launch a rival to the Champions League, which is extending the rift with the European counterparts and the footballing body of Europe, UEFA.

The nine clubs that have now be readmitted back into the ECA are eligible to have a say and collectively influence the direction of European football for the future.

All 12 founding clubs of the Super League backed out of the ECA in mid-April when they went back on their promise to their previous commitments to UEFA to launch the Super League.

The ECA is now headed by Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the president of Paris Saint-Germain. PSG was one of the big clubs to have not signed for the Super League that collapsed within 48 hours of the announcement. The ECA said “There is an exhaustive process of re-engagement by the clubs and re-assessment” before it’s the executive board had allowed clubs to withdraw their previous resignations.
