On April 18th, 2021, those associated with football saw the birth of a new league that was the European Super League. The 12 founding members/clubs of the European Super League were Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, and Real Madrid.

At the very beginning of the announcement of the league, the idea of having another competition was not expected by those associated with football. From UEFA to the fans of these, all of them expressed their displeasure and spoke against the idea of the European Super League. At that time UEFA President said Aleksander Čeferin stated that UEFA would begin making “legal assessments” on the 12 founding members of the European Super League.

Critics say that the idea of the European Super League is just Money Minded since it doesn’t have the concept of Relegation for those 12 founding members/clubs. After a massive protest clubs like Arsenal, Atlético Madrid, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, AC Milan, and Tottenham Hotspur withdrew their name from the European Super League but other clubs like Real Madrid Juventus, and Barcelona kept their hopes alive for announcing The European Super League.

Bernd Reichart, the chief executive of the competition said European Super League could contain up to 80 teams in a multi-divisional format. Teams would be guaranteed a minimum of 14 matches a season. The league would be based on sporting performance with zero permanent members. Bernd Reichart further said. “It’s time for a change. It is the clubs that bear the entrepreneurial risk in football. But when important decisions are at stake, they are too often forced to sit idly by on the sidelines as the sporting and financial foundations crumble around them. Our talks have also made it clear that clubs often find it impossible to speak out publicly against a system that uses the threat of sanctions to thwart opposition.”
