On Monday, an Edinson Cavani penalty gave Uruguay a 1-0 win against Paraguay in the Copa America, setting up a quarter-final match against Colombia. Despite the tight scoreline, Uruguay put forth a dominant performance, creating the vast majority of chances but failing to break down Paraguay’s tenacious defence.

Uruguay lacked quality in front of goal as well and had to rely on Cavani’s 21st-minute penalty kick to win.

Giorgian de Arrascaeta had the best early chances, but Nahitan Nández was knocked over in the box for an 18th-minute penalty, which Cavani converted. In the 68th minute, the Manchester United striker was replaced by Luis Suarez but the Atlético Madrid striker was equally frustrated in front of goal.

With a slim lead, Uruguay conceded a late free-kick near their goal, giving Paraguay hope of a late equalizer, but it was in vain. Uruguay will look to work on their attack before the big match coming ahead as they lacked finishing.

Winners of Group A Argentina, which defeated Bolivia 4-1, will face Ecuador in the quarterfinals, while host Brazil will face Chile on Friday in Rio de Janeiro. Paraguay and Peru will play on the same day.
